Reoccupying a commercial site or workplace can only be allowed after and asbestos clearance inspection is carried out to determine whether or not the licenced asbestos removal was completed safely and correctly. Only then will can asbestos clearance certificate be provided to the removalist and state or territorial authorities.

Once a clearance certificate has been issued, the site is then considered safe for reoccupation and can be used as normal prior to the asbestos removal work was undertaken.

In order to remove asbestos at a workplace properly, a licenced asbestos removalist with either a Class A or Class B is required, however, depending on the size and asbestos material type itemised at the work site, will depend on the class of licenced required.

To be certain of the asbestos removalist required for the removal work, a pre-demolition penetrative asbestos audit should be performed by a licenced Asbestos Assessor or Occupational Hygienist. This type of inspection will identify all accessible asbestos in the building or structure allowing for a comprehensive removal job to be carried out.

What is Asbestos Air Monitoring?

Asbestos air monitoring is conducted at workplaces or residential demolitions to assess the presence of asbestos fibres in the air at the time of asbestos removal and to ensure that control measures are implemented effectively. It is a cost effective way to ensure peace of mind for you and your neighbours that your local area is not contaminated with asbestos.

What Types of Asbestos Air Monitoring is there?

There are several different types of asbestos air monitoring and testing which include the following:

clearance monitoring

Asbestos exposure air monitoring is the process of testing the air in a workers breathing zone to assess the likelihood of exposure to respirable asbestos fibres. Exposure monitoring and the subsequent testing of the membrane filter is designed to unequivocally evaluate a person’s exposure level in order to compare the results with the national exposure standard.

Background asbestos air monitoring is the process that involves conducting air tests for respirable fibres prior to commencing work which may disturb known asbestos materials.

Control asbestos air monitoring is the testing of respirable airborne asbestos fibres in a work area while the removal work in ongoing. This is done to determine if the control measures in place are effective. The control method is regarded as the most effective way to measure asbestos containing material and monitor for asbestos airborne fibres.

Clearance asbestos air monitoring is a test undertaken to measure the level of airborne asbestos fibres in an area after the removal of asbestos containing materials (ACM). When the level of airborne asbestos fibres is measured as being below 0.01 fibres/mL can the area be cleared for reoccupation.
